First patch
Major Update
This update is the first substantial content and polish pass for the jam project, with a rebuilt tutorial, a much smarter AI opponent, major UI improvements, and a long list of gameplay fixes.
New Interactive Tutorial
The tutorial has been completely rebuilt from the ground up.
- 19 tutorial pages with 3D move diagrams for every piece
- Interactive practice boards where you can freely test each piece's movement
- Three playable Capture the Flag training scenarios:
- Steal & Score
- Recapture
- Flag Hand-off
- Complete any drill by successfully bringing the enemy flag back to your home zone
A number of tutorial issues were also fixed, including several soft-locks and the bug that caused messages to repeat after every move.
AI Overhaul
The AI now understands Capture the Flag and actively plays the objective.
Previously, it mostly played standard chess and only interacted with flags by coincidence. Now it can:
- Steal, carry, defend, and recover flags
- Deliver captured flags to its scoring zone
- Respond to threats around carriers
- Remember recently seen enemy pieces
- Operate under the same fog-of-war restrictions as the player
Three AI playstyles are now available:
- Rusher
- Balanced
- Strategic
A bug causing the AI to deliver flags to the wrong layer has also been fixed.
Settings and Menu Improvements
The settings menu has been reorganized into clearer categories:
- Display
- CTF HUD
- Board & Camera
- Audio
Every option now includes a short description explaining its purpose.
New Capture the Flag options include:
- Objective Markers
- Respawn Panel
- Carrier Threat Alerts
- Reduced Motion
Control settings have been cleaned up and grouped more logically, and a new first-launch setup wizard now provides guidance for:
- Touch controls
- Mouse and keyboard
- Gamepad
Capture the Flag Improvements
Several new gameplay and HUD features have been added.
- Objective markers now highlight important locations
- Respawn countdowns show when captured pieces will return
- Local hot-seat play now includes a "Pass the Device" screen to preserve fog of war
- New alerts warn when a flag carrier is under attack
Scoring zones are now clearly separated by side:
- White scores on the bottom layer
- Black scores on the top layer
Flags are now treated as solid objectives. Pieces can no longer move through a resting flag, and only enemy pieces can step onto a flag to capture it.
Controls and Camera
A few control issues have been addressed.
- Pan now properly raises and lowers the board instead of acting like a second zoom control
- Bishop movement now animates smoothly instead of appearing to teleport
Bug Fixes
- Fixed premature draws caused by the 50-move rule in Capture the Flag matches
- Promotions now correctly refresh fog-of-war visibility and HUD information
- Numerous stability, gameplay, and visual fixes throughout the project
This update lays the groundwork for future Capture the Flag features and continued AI improvements.
